Study analysis of Western Culture, educational culture in film: 

Bad Teacher
            Bad Teacher is An American Comedy film directed by Jake Kasdan and was released in 2011, June 24th at United State. Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) is a bad and immoral teacher who teaches in Jams School.  A woman who loves to get drunk and smoke marijuana teaches badly in a junior high school. For every meeting she only gave videos or films to watch in class while she sleeps. She was indifferent toward everything, does not care to everyone. She always speaks badly/crudely, curses to her students. She quit for her job after a year be a teacher in Jams school under the reason marriage planning party. She teaches only for waiting her marriage to the wealthy fiancé. But before that happen her future mother-in-law asked her son to finish their relationship, because she know that Halsey only after the money.
            Three months later Halsey back to her job, be a teacher again, precisely in Jams school. Almost the same manner moreover the worst. Now she tries to win a man heart, also a wealthy, the wealthy teacher exactly, Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake). She plans to get surgery to enlarge her breast and become more motivated because she looks that Scott’s ex-girlfriend has large breast too. But she must competes with the over enthusiastic teacher Amy (Lucy Punch). While a gym teacher, Russell Gettis (Jason Segel) makes it clear that he is interested in Halsey. But she is not interested in him.
            To create her surgery plan she should pay almost $10.000, but does not have as much as that money. She does everything included join the Saturday car wash day, a school yearly program for class 7th. Amy tried to warn the principle that Halsey embezzlement money. But he ignored her because she can’t prove the accusation. Amy also report about Halsey’s ignoring school rules, consumed marijuana etc.
           
Feels her planning to win Scott doesn’t go well, she tries to get $5.700 by making the class to get the highest score at test which always Amy claimed in 2 years recently. After getting this information from Lyn, her college, she paid more attention to the class. She starts the quiz every day, every meeting, and makes punish to who cannot answer the questions. But hell yeah, she got that prize of $5.700. By illegal way, copying the questions, cheated the state exam.
           
            Amy gets poisoned by an apple that Halsey put on her table. Elizabeth (Halsey) followed the spring field trip, a school program that actually Amy become a supervisor but Halsey took her position. Amy gets annoyed. At night she tried to seduce Scott, making a phone call, leave a message to Amy’s number send their voice. She got mad at her, her suspicion to Halsey become more and more.
She tried to discover Halsey’s secret by changing her table with Halsey’s. After opened her drawer she got a wig, and found that Halsey took a copied of the exam questions by contacting Carl Halabi, Illinois, Province Standard Exam Officer. She immediately report this case to the principal. But without prove the principal will dismiss it. So she contacts Carl, investigate him. After a long spring field trip, they’re back to school. There were Halsey being interrogated by principal and a council. But when Carl, be the witness, explain that he was wrong with his last statement to miss. Amy. He got drunk at that time. This is because Halsey sent him a black-mail to Carl using his embarrassing photos, and will share all these photos if he tells the fact about her. So, Halsey released.
Not only that. Halsey knows that her table had been changed by Amy. So she said about teacher who consumes drugs. When the police arrive and bring their sniffer dog, they find Halsey’s oxy-contin pills and Marijuana in Amy’s table. Amy is arrested and transferred to the worst school by superintendent, in Malcom-X school.
At the end, Scott tried to start over again with Halsey, but she rejects him. When the new school year starts she is kinder to her co-worker, and tried to make relationship with Russell. Cancel her breast enlargement surgery, because she feels find by the ways she is. She got new position in school as a guidance counselor.
The strong characters that Halsey has in this movie would be discussed in here. In this movie Halsey, the school teacher has bad manner teaching her students. This makes shameful to education level especially teacher. Doing drugs in front of the class, sleeps while teaches in the class, and only shows movie to the student in every meeting. She does not care to the education itself. Speak crudely, by unsuitable words to the children.

About American Education.
            Americans “believe in” education. This country has maintained schools from the time of the very earliest settlement. Most of us would probably agree that education helps us to earn a better living and believe that good education is necessary for maintaining our individual freedoms and for general human and economic welfare. (Education in American Society: 3-4)
American Education in the twentieth Century.
            The American high school has change greatly within the past fifty years.
In the past, every child is an individual, different from all other children. In the classroom they cannot be treated in exactly the same way or taught by identical method. Public expects the teachers to understand how they grow and how they learn and to be able to recognize many differences among them. Until the twentieth century it was not considered essential for teacher to know very much about child psychology. Many people even today think that the whole purpose of education is to “train the mind.” (283)
From the statement above, we know that school, education area, or teacher not only to teach children or students but also educate them included their personality and their manner. This is so different look between what in concept and what reality brings out. Nowadays teacher only do their job as teacher which is to teach student. Without know what kind of education they need. Therefore, recently many criminals increase year by year moreover day by day.



Johann Friedrich Herbart, a German university professor. He believed that real morality grows out of a sense of duty which everyone acquires who gains a complete and accurate knowledge of the world. This closely resembles the belief of Socrates that “knowledge is virtue”- thorough understanding of nature and mankind will lead the individual to choose virtue as the best way of life. (284-285)
By this fact, Halsey did not do the right things in teaching, moreover she made a bad look in education. Is Elizabeth Halsey educated enough? If no, why she could fulfill the requirements to be a teacher? What standard that Jams school or American School choosing and accepting a teacher? This seems like American has weak in administrative in education area.
Good teachers are necessary if we are to have a good school. Indeed, no other factor in American education-neither the buildings and facilities, nor the curriculum, nor the quality of administration, nor the support of the tax players-is quite so important as having teachers who are intelligent, hard-working, and highly skilled in profession. (403)
Recruitment of teachers has been haphazard. A weakness in the profession has been the lack of careful methods of selecting those to be admitted to teacher training. In education there has been much less effort on the part of teachers to screen out unpromising candidates for teachers education of to establish higher standards for membership in the profession itself. Certification or licensing protects the children from teachers with insufficient preparation and ability for their work. (407-415)
I personally think this film is so less in education, jokes that they played are adult jokes. And for me these jokes not funny at all. I didn’t find myself laugh in particularly joke, although this is a kind of drama comedy. The movie which produced by Jimmy Miller and David Housholter is seems only focus in Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, Lucy Punch and Jason Segel popularity which for me did not really sell.




Elizabeth Halsey got her aim not through the right ways. She shows bad manners in teaching, relation between students and co-workers. Provides American bad cultures just like as drugs, crude, greedy for money. But in the end although she became a good one, found her love, love herself by the way she is, but what I do not agree is the way she got them. Bad ways.

 The Third and The Final Continent

Jhumpa Lahiri was born on July 11th 1967 is an American author with Indian in his blood.
A short story published in The New Yorker magazine, America in June 21th 1999. As an Author whose Indian blood, Jhumpa Lahiri wanted to describe the readers about India people, their culture. It can be seen that an Indian man to be the main character in this story.
All that I want to write in this essay is about what the author wanted to provide, why this kind of story, I mean ‘the third and final continent’ was written. Why India, England and America took place. And why she used an India man and woman (wife) to be the main character.
The first answer I got from the beginning of the story is that the author wanted to tell readers about how strong that the Indian people in foreign country, and how hard that the Bengalis’ life in abroad. Can be proved by the some sentences : live in a house occupied by penniless Bengali bachelors trying to educate and establish ourselves abroad. Or cooking pots of egg curry, which we ate with our hands on the table covered with newspapers.
This story also related to her life who was born in London, take lectures to the USA and has Indian blood. Here I catch is that she does not like American life style, it can be seen in a statement that the narrator compared between England and American that is: a bottle of milk that he got every morning in front of his house in London but in America he must go to supermarket to buy a carton of milk. Then in YMCA the narrator described how stuffy and noisy the place that he stayed. By statement: I had to keep the window wide open; it was the only source of air in the stifling room, and the noise was intolerable, with his fingers pressed into his ears.
Another thing the author described America through relation between Mrs. Croft and her daughter, Helen. They have a complicated relation. My question is why here in the story Helen does not live with her mother especially Mrs. Croft was 103 years old. A very old age to live alone and here in this time Helen should take care of her by living together. Also in the other case is Mrs. Croft does not like Helen style which very sexy in dressed and more free in life style. But by Helen, this is 1969 where a lot girls have the same instead her.
Author, Jumpa Lahiri also pretended to describe and provided a good side in Indian people. Proved in her statement in explained Mala’s habit wearing sari and her manner. Instead of telling bad side in Indian like her describe American before, while narrator compare, complain and explain American, she commended Indian culture by telling a marriage relationship instead of free (free sex) life. And by the first sight the narrator seem does not like his wife because although Mala has good talents in many aspects but those are not enough to possess a fair complexion or Mala does not have something special in her face; but in the end of story the narrator love her very much. And by Mrs. Croft saying that Mala is a perfect lady that makes the narrator smiled to his wife for the first time. And makes their distance began to lessen.
By all the proved above, finally I personally think that here in this story the author wrote what she has in her heart and what actually she got in her head, because that is usually writers done to their creation. Using their imagination or on what they want to write by their head or heart. She loves her motherland and wants reader to pay attention to it. That is why this story takes reason.

This is little argued between analyzers; some may said Jhumpa Lahiri got wrong in describing Indian people or Indian culture. But some may said that is normal, because she was away apart from her mother country. She lived in a long time in abroad, born in England and grew up in USA.

haha.. lagi-lagi masih belajar :)

Hari ini tanggal 7 Maret, hari pertama ia masuk sekolah baru. Khumairah mengenakan kerudung nya bersiap-siap hendak menuntut ilmu. Gadis muslimah ini baru saja pindah dari Pondok Pesantren Dar El Hikmah,Pekanbaru, tempat nya bersekolah dulu. Namun siapa duga, Khumairah justru pindah ke sekolah negri SMA Negri 01 Koto Gasib, Siak. Atsmospher yang justru berbanding terbalik dengan sekolah nya dulu. Ini bukan kehendaknya, melainkan kehendak sang ayah yang inginkan khumairah menjadi seorang dokter. Khumairah malah lebih senang dengan suasana pondok pesantren nya dulu, tenang, damai, penuh dengan nuansa religious dibandingkan dengan kelasnya yang sekarang, sesak, bising, perempuan dan laki-laki yang bercampur dalam satu ruangan, serta beberapa yang tidak berhijab. Membayangkan nya saja Khumairah sedih.
Setelah melakukan beberapa persiapan, mengenakan kaus kaki dan manset tangan nya, Khumairah tak lupa salim kepada Ayah dan Ibu nya. Dengan menggunakan sepeda ia pun berangkat dengan niat menuntut ilmu. Sambil mengayuh sepeda gadis bertubuh pendek dan kecil ini melantunkan ayat-ayat indah, kalam Allah, beberapa penggalan ayat Al-Quran yang ia hafal di sekolah nya dulu. Bibir mungilnya begitu fasih mengucapkan kalimat-kalimat indah itu. Dengan hati-hati ia memarkirkan sepeda nya di samping beberapa sepeda anak-anak lainnya. Tak lupa ia ucapkan Basmalah sebelum meninggalkan sepedanya. Itu pun sudah menjadi kebiasaan gadis berkulit terang ini sejak masuk ke pesantren.
Sesampai di kelas barunya, Ia langsung disambut dengan  senyuman dari kawan-kawan baru nya ini. “Asslamualaikum, Khumairah.” Seru dari salah seorang siswi dari bangku pojok disalah satu sudut ruangan kelas. “Alaikumsalam” jawab Khumairah tak lupa sertakan senyum nya, teman ini membalas dengan senyum bersahabat. Terlihat dari wajah ramah dan santun, juga mengenakan kerudung seperti dirinya, kulit sawo matang nya membuat nya terlihat lebih manis dengan senyum itu. pikir Khumairah. Tanpa banyak tingkah Khumairah langsung menghampiri dan menyalaminya. “Khumairah” kata nya. “Jannah, Raudhatul Jannah. Panggil saja Jannah” kata sang gadis membalas jabat tangan Khumairah dan langsung mempersilahkan nya duduk. Tak lama berselang, beberapa anak berlarian masuk kelas ada yang sambil membawa serta gitarnya, ada yang sambil mendengarkan ipod mini nya, melenggang masuk kelas dengan beberapa tarian kecil, dan ada pula yang bercerita bersama beberapa teman nya, yeah pastinya itu para gadis kalau bukan siapa lagi yang suka bergosip ria, apa lagi yang diceritakan adalah actor-aktor korea yang tak dikenal nya. Melihat tingkah teman-teman kelasnya ini Khumairah tertawa kecil, merasakan kelucuan namun juga aneh. Mengapa mereka lebih memilih kegiatan itu dibandingkan membaca beberapa buku pelajaran yang akan dimulai atau membaca Al-Quran misalnya? Itu lebih jauh bermanfaat, batinnya. “hemm, itulah mereka” kata Jannah sambil melirik Khumairah. Tak disangka ternyata teman semeja nya ini memperhatikan nya dan mengetahui apa yang ia pikirkan. Hahaa.. Sambil tersenyum kecil Khumairah mengeluarkan beberapa buku dari dalam tas nya.
Sontak kelas hening seketika. Ternyata kedatangan seorang guru sejarah membuat mereka diam seribu bahasa. Setelah diperhatikan, ternyata guru ini berperawakan tegas. Dengan alis mata tebal kaku menandakan bahwa beliau tak kenal kompromi. Muka dengan postur rahang sedikit berbentuk petak terlihat seperti tak suka basa-basi. Badan tegap, tinggi dan pundak lebar menambah kesan gentle pada dirinya. Sontak Khumairah terkejut mendengar suara beliau yang lantang bukan kepalang saat membuka pelajaran. Pak Agus, begitu anak-anak memanggilnya. Sepertinya aku harus berhati-hati dengan beliau jika tak ingin berurusan dengan mata hitam nan tajam itu, batin Khumairah dalam hati.

Pelajaran pertama selesai, lanjut pelajaran kedua, Kimia. Kali ini yang masuk seorang wanita muda, usia sekitar dua puluhan, 26 mungkin. Siswa pun terlihat sedikit santai saat ini. Beberapa gurauan siswa lontarkan kepada sang guru. Sedikit kurang sopan bagiku, tapi guru ini tak menghiraukan, malah sekali-sekali menjawab dan membalas gurauan siswa tadi. Kini kelaspun menjadi agak ribut. Bertubuh mungil kecil sang guru terlihat lucu. Senyum imut beliau juga membuat tegang nya pelajaran sebelumnya sirna. Andai beliau berkerudung pasti bu guru terlihat lebih anggun, batinnya lagi. “Beliau seorang budhist” gumam Jannah pelan, hingga hanya Khumairah saja yang mendengarnya. Lagi-lagi ia membaca pikiranku, Khumairah membatin. Baru ia sadari bahwa mata sipit sang guru disertakan kulit putih khas orang tionghoa menegaskan ras dan asal muasal keluarganya.

Our Malay Culture

It Is The Responsibility Of Government To Preserve And Protect Malay Culture.

Culture is a tradition of life which is developed and owned by a group of people and become a legacy from one generation to the next generation, and also in the same manner as culture, is the part that cannot be separated from human life so that most of them disposed to think that culture is inherited genetically. When one communicates to another one with different culture and tries to adapt the differentiation, it can be argued that the culture can be learned. According to the Andreas Eppink’s statement that the culture contains from social value, social norm, knowledge and all social structures, religion and others, in addition all intellectual and artistic value that become characteristic in the society. In Indonesian, Malay culture is what we said with custom, manner, tradition of Malay and stay along the east coast of Sumatera, in Riau Islands.
Then according to the Malay people, the Malayan is not seen from where they are from or their genetics. Someone can be said as Malay if he is a moslem, speaks in Malay language, and has Malay tradition, or a stranger who stay in Malay island for a long time.
If the definition of culture and Malay above can be understood, the exertion protecting culture may become relevant. It is not excessive if we said that the existence of revitalization to protect and save traditional culture which was always being claimed by another nation recently is a way to show the nationalism of Indonesian citizen.
Talking about Malay culture, in Indonesian we have many varieties of culture, but Malay culture is the oldest, the biggest one and well known by Indonesian population or other nations. Because the author was Malay and the author’s parents were born in Riau that is why the author takes this essay title.
Central and regional government especially in Riau province must always support the preservation of Malay culture because Indonesian language was born by Malay language which is used as the official language of Republic Indonesian. From the linguistic point of view, Indonesian is one from many varieties of Malay language. The basis language used is Malay language in Riau, 19th century.
Not about the language issue only, actually the preservation of culture need to be done because it also related to economic issue. Culture can be job vacancy to the people who contributes on it. For example artist or musician of traditional Malay song, traditional Malay dancer and etc, that is less attention by now by younger generation. But this preservation of Malay culture will recover this condition.
Before our culture exists in name only, through this essay, I want to give an input of thought that might be a solution to overcome the lack protection of culture, hope that culture will always be maintained and preserved so that this heritage can be felt by generations to generation.
In this culture preservation, we need proper methods to run. Especially in this current globalization era local culture has been eroded by the outer cultures that give more appeal to the pleasures that are misleading and duping the public. Many young generations are reluctant to participate in preserving the culture, as there are some cases in Riau in some villages have started abandoning Malay traditional culture such as wedding ceremony, art, dance, martial arts and others.
Government is expected socialize this culture by cooperating with organizations that concern about this to solve the existing problem then to achieve vision and mission 2020 to make Riau province become Malay cultural center in Southeast Asia.

The author thought to achieve a success in promoting culture especially Malay culture, the first lesson is how to interpret culture all around us and never leave it, and the second one is to increase in maintaining culture, our cultural heritage both quantity and quality from the influence of foreign culture, then creating educational culture in every society level.

Epistemology

jadi Epistemoligi berkaitan dengan cara memperoleh pengetahuan atau cara kita mengamati sesuatu.

Ada beberapa cara kita memperoleh pengetahuan dalam filsafat : disini saya hanya menerangkan sedikit tentang Koherensi, berdasarkan pengertian yang saya peroleh dari kamus ilmiah.
              Namun dalam kajian nya ada beberapa cara selain koherensi, yaitu korespondensi (induktif), empiris, dan pragmatis. Dan itu semua akan saya coba jelaskan juga dengan pemahaman saya (yang sedikit ini) dari penjelasan dosen Filsafat yang saya terima pagi ini (semoga ilmu yang beliau berikan bermanfaat untuk saya teman-teman, dan sahabat pembaca, serta pahala yang terus mengalir untuk beliau, aamiin..)

   Koherensi (deduktif) :
 teori untuk menguji kebenaran, dengan menekankan konsistensi dan keharmonisan antara segala keputusan-keputusan kita.

Koherensi dapat disebut juga dengan pembuktian kebenaran.
-          Ciri-ciri: (menurut definisi koherensi diatas)

·       Panca indra : menggunakan panca indra seperti pada subbab empiris.
Contoh : kita mengambil sebuah pena, kita angkat pena tersebut lalu kita lepaskan. Disini pena jatuh. Kita uji lagi dengan pergi ke lokasi lain tetap pena ini terjatuh. Lalu coba lagi ke daerah lain misalkan ke luar negeri. Tetap pena ini terjatuh, atau bahkan kita gunakan benda lain, dan masih tetap terjatuh. Sampai lah kita memperoleh kesimpulan bahwa pena/benda itu akan terjatuh jika kita lepaskan.
Konsisten : tetap
Pena tetap terjatuh kebawah, walau pun berulang-ulang kali di lepaskan.
 Keahrmonisan : harmonis, sejalan, beriringan.
Melalui beberapa kali uji coba si pena terjatuh kebawah, tidak bertentangan (naik/jatuh keatas) ini yang dinamakan keharmonisan.

Korespondensi : yaitu kebenaran akan dianggap benar jika sesuai dengan fakta (berkoresponden). kalimat yang diucapkan sesuai dengan yang ada, realistis dan serasi dengan fakta.

saya ambil contoh : "diluar sedang hujan" pernyataan ini akan dianggap benar jika diluar benar2 sedang hujan.

Pragmatisme  : Aliran pragmatisme lebih kepada keuntungan atau manfaat yang dihasilkan. apakah ini membawa kepada keuntungan atau faedah bagi manusia.

Empirisme :  Berdasarkan penganut empirisme, mengatakan bahwa pengetahuan didapat dari pengalaman. Aliran ini lebih mementingkan panca indra dan mengesampingkan peranan akal.
pengetahuan haruslah didapat dari pengalaman, bukan dari akal. jadi para praktisi empirisme tidak mau membahas (menolak) tentang hal-hal yang bersifat ghaib (yang tidak bisa dikaji melalui panca indra : mata, telinga, hidung, mulut, tangan dll.)


jika ada salah penyampaian akan saya perbaiki, begitulah ilmu seharusnya..  berjalan mengalir terus tanpa henti...
